In Natural History, Plinius gives us a story of a girl who drew a silhouette of a lover, which resulted in the origin of paintings. From this story, we can formulate a hypothesis that the origin of paintings is to draw a line. A line contains various questions such as existence and absence, action and trace, and material and image, which shows us the fact that a painting is a structure with variety, containing ancient chaos. Painting a picture as drawing lines can bring us back to such origin.
